Its official, the British music scene is saved by a bunch of
girls, and Arctic Monkeys. As the Brit awards nominations and winners crashed unceremoniously
from leftfield to mainstream, you couldn’t help notice that the chicks are definitely
ruling the roost. Kate Nash and Adele both picked up awards whilst Amy
Winehouse, Beth Ditto and Leona Lewis (and yes I have left Kylie off that list)
all turned in mesmerising performances.
Star of the night was a tie, weirdly,
between Amy Winehouse and Leona Lewis. Amy because when she’s on form (even if
only just) she is undeniably a legend happening right in front of you and Leona
because, despite her wanky TV arrival, her voice never fails to hypnotise.
The Brits is always a mish mash (or is that mosh?), but then
an awards ceremony representing the British music scene can’t really be
anything else. That’s no bad thing, we’ve come to love the Brits for its
slaughtered rock bands meets disapproving ‘professionals’ vibe, dodgy hosts
(this years’ Osborne fest was no exception) and weird nominations.
Take That are now officially our best live band (love you
lads, but hmmm), but Arctic Monkeys are our best group. Kylie’s our best
international lady but Kate Nash is our best Brit. Can we make our minds up?..
NO! Brits we love you, you make no sense at all and neither do we. Come on, roll
out another drunk. The Brits 2008 was summed up perfectly by Rihanna (was she
on stilts?) dueting with Klaxons, a weird idea that worked a treat.
