Bouncing into the 21st Century with shameless enthusiasm, the B52s are now pushing fifty but can still pump out irresistible party music as effortlessly as the halcyon days of Rock Lobster (1979) and Love Shack (1989)...
An incredible 30 years after first forming, the latest single off their
new album, Funplex, is neither hackneyed nor rehashed. Juliet Of The
Spirits harks back to the glory days only because of its insistent,
outrageous pop hook and Cindy and Kate’s scintillating, girly vocals.
Fifth member, songwriter Keith Strickland’s motivation for the song was Fellini’s movie of the same name, about strength and independence. Judging by the looks and sounds of Cindy and Kate (surely part of ‘Futurama’s inspiration), the B52s are still more than capable of ‘shaking that ass’. Endless legs and big hair... Scary!
