Super prolific remixer and ex Output label boss Trevor Jackson, aka Playgroup, takes Black Affair's dark and brooding eighties homage It's Real and turns it into... well, a dark and brooding early nineties homage. Both versions are passable club tracks, but is it really worth all that effort (and cash?) to move It's Real 5 years further forward in history?
Playgroup's remix leans heavily on hazy memories of warehouse parties and late eighties electro, coming in somewhere between Show Me Love (Robin S) without the echo or Situation (Yazoo) minus an arpeggio or two. The result leaves Steve Mason's vocals sounding like the microphone was given to the pizza delivery boy, which explains the inclusion of an instrumental.
You'll know Black Affair's Steve Mason, if not by name then by band, he
being ex of The Beta Band and King Biscuit Time. Sadly, this track,
remixed or not, doesn't come close to the moments of pure joy conjured
by The Beta Band, standing as it does somewhere between bedroom remixer
indulgence and 4am DJ fodder.
