Awkward adolescent girls take heart! Skinny girls with a
guilt complex, fear not! Pretty girls in destructive make up, feel loved! Polly
Scattergood is here and she’s got your number, she’s humming your tune and if she’s
not feeling your pain, she’s certainly selling it.
Not that it’s such a bad tune to hum, ultra angsty though it
may be. New single I Hate The Way, released on Mute on 22nd
September, has shades of Beth Orton and Elbow and even borrows MGMTs keyboards
for a little mid song wigouttery. Close mic’d vocals and poundingdrums give Polly Scattergood’s second single
an intensely intimate and cloying quality that is effective and engaging.
However I Hate The Way comes off a little too stroppy middle
class teenager - bedroom webcam PJ Harvey covers in air thick with White Musk -
and I can’t help thinking Polly should save up her royalties to buy herself and
almighty slap.
When you touch me you’re like a needle slowly piercing my
skin, pass me some pills and I will go to bed, my doctor said I’ve got to
sing a happy tune – Jeesus Polly your doctor should tell you to give singing a
break for a while, you’ve obviously got some shit you need to work through.
I Hate The Way is out on Mute on 22nd September
with an album to follow in early 2009.
Polly Scattergood is on tour throughout September and October,
