The latest indie darlings Popular Workshop have had copious amounts of praise heaped upon them by the music press and this their latest assault on the charts is pulsating with energy. There is no denying there is some excellent musicianship afoot in their work but Popsong is lacking any sort of hook for the listener to grab hold of.
It is also puzzling trying to decipher if the title is a stab at irony. With the lack of a tune, an obvious lyrical hook or any sort of structure it might as well be. Sure, Popsong scores a few points by being produced by the legendary Steve Albini, and it's a nifty little song indeed, but it’s unlikely to command any attention beyond their current fanbase.
i>Popsong is a taste of their potential and what might come rather than a crowning glory.
