The Black Keys release a new album - Attack and Release, with a little help from Gnarles Barkley's Dangermouse!
I confess that when I first heard that Dangermouse had produced Attack
and Release, I was a little worried and so had my fingers crossed all the way home after picking up the record. Like most Black Keys fans, I have a lot of love and respect the band for having a
very authentic, grimey blues tone that makes them sound, well.... old.
Forgive me then for being
scared that Dangermouse might add a few too many beats or other electronica, causing the Black
Keys signature sound to be compromised.
Phew!
Thankfully, I'm happy to report that this record still sounds like the Keys
and Dangermouse's input has worked pretty well. The change in production has given The Black Keys a more soulful
feel, especially on tracks like Lies. Attack and Release has an array of truely
memorable moments ranging from in your face grit to songs like Psychotic Girl
which, for the record, sounds like the Keys wrote it whilst sleeping in the Nevada desert
smoking the entire 1970's supply of hash.
I have Magic Potion, their previous release, and I liked it for its raw blues. I am also a hip-hop fan, and I enjoyed Dangermouse's Grey Album. For these two artists to collaborate is simply awesome. I can't want to aqcuire this album. -gg
