You may argue that you could pick any number of male Motown (or even Northern Soul) artists. However, (& let's be honest about this) - "R & B" (as it is termed now) requires a major overhaul for the better.
With that in mind, there's no harm in a sound that tips its hat towards Marvin, Smokey, Curtis et al.
Emphasis is on the subtle production - music-buyers are being fobbed-off by the retro-sound (Mark Ronson, stop adding bloody horns to everything), so if you want to listen to something retro, but made this year, make it this.
